Mask with protein versus Gel with protein
May 12, 2023
I'm always curious about the effects of different products and techniques on my curls, so I can't help but keep testing and comparing. Today was one of those days...
FINAL WASH TO RESET YOUR CURLS
First of all I started with a final wash with the Jumbo Elke Dag Shampoo.
TIP: It is highly recommended to do this a few times a year to properly reset your hair.
Why? Because I had my hair bleached last week to freshen up my curls a bit, and it had been years since I had done a final wash.
I applied the final wash shampoo all over my hair, not just on the scalp.
HAIR MASK WITH AND WITHOUT PROTEIN
Then I applied a hair mask, from another brand, with high protein content on the right side (left for me but photo right) of my hair applied and to the left the All-in-One Treatment used.
After five minutes, rinse off the mask and treatment.
Then the All-in-One Styling Cream applied to my soaking wet hair in the shower (1 pump).
I have the squish to condish method applied by holding my hair under the shower head three times for a short time and scrunching in between.
With this method you ensure that you can squeeze moisture and nutrition into your curls and it will also be better distributed. It is important that you still leave product in your curls, you can feel this because it still feels nice and smooth.
This photo shows how the curls look soaking wet, you can already see more curl on the left..
STYLING GEL WITH AND WITHOUT PROTEIN
Next our Styling Gel applied to soaking wet hair on the right side, without protein because that side had already had a mask with protein.
On the left side the Styling Gel with our protein drops is used to restore the balance so that both sides contain proteins.
Then with the hydrophilic towel squeezed out excess water and dried with the diffuser.
What and how much was used:
Final wash: a handful
Mask from Brand X (I won't mention the name but it's very popular and has 2 proteins in the first 5 ingredients): a big blob
All-in-One Treatment: 2 pumps
All-in-One Styling Cream: 1 pump
Styling Gel: 2 pumps
Protein Drops: 5 drops
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROTEIN MASK vs. PROTEIN GEL
Left: more definition and shine
Right: less definition and less shine
CONCLUSION: For me it works better to add the drops to the gel.
Of course, it could also be that the proteins in the mask from brand X are not enough for my curls, but the fact is that I am happier with the result with the protein drops.
And well, I may be walking around with 2 different outcomes,,, but personally this is really the best method to find out how your curls react to different products / techniques etc.
Heap I hope this has inspired you to also test products in this way.
