Make your own Sea Salt Spray

Every curly haired woman likes to change her routine and experiment with different product combinations. Many of us end up creating our own formulas, even accidentally!

If you've ever tried sea salt sprays, you've probably noticed that they weigh down or dry out your curls. Many love the texture that sea salt gives and because you do not always have the sun, beach and salt water at your disposal, we can delight you with a DIY Sea Salt Spray that does not dry out curls.

BEFORE YOU MAKE A SEA SALT SPRAY...

A few tips before you start your curl chemistry experiment:

Find a spray bottle with a fine mist that sprays more than a single stream in the direction of your hair. No matter how expensive the bottle is, it will eventually get clogged, so you can opt for cheap bottles that can be easily replaced.

The higher the salt to water ratio, the more texture you get - so don't overdo it! You can always add more salt if necessary.

Each hair type needs its own balance of ingredients. For hair types 2b-3a, the spray tightens curls, but depending on your hair type it can loosen them. The overall goal is to achieve a natural and even texture.

WHAT DO YOU NEED

  • 1 mist spray bottle 300 ml
  • approx. 150 ml filtered or distilled water
  • One and a half teaspoons of sea salt
  • approx. 150 ml rose water
  • A few drops of essential oil of your choice

If you have a spray bottle of 150 ml, halve all quantities. For 200 ml adjust in proportion (100 ml water - 1 teaspoon sea salt - 100 rose water)

THE BENEFITS FOR YOUR HAIR

Just as shower water filters benefit your hair, using filtered or distilled water in DIY products can prevent excessive drying from chlorine in tap water and protect color and shine.

Although salt water absorbs moisture and can dry out hair if overused, it is essential for creating a texture spray and has also been shown to stimulate circulation for a healthy scalp. You only add a small amount and it is diluted in water, so it will not dry out the hair.

You can add essential oils to your mix for their scent and aroma therapeutic benefits.

GUIDELINES

Fill your plastic spray bottle with water.

Pour the sea salt into the water. Screw on the spray cap and close it if possible. Just shake! If you have trouble dissolving the salt, warm the water slightly.

Unscrew the cap and add a few drops of essential oil if you like a nice scent.

Fill the rest of the bottle with rose water . Leave a little space at the top of the bottle so that the mixture can be shaken.

Close the cap tightly and shake one last time. Now you are ready to style.

HOW TO USE THE SALT SPRAY

You can use it as a finishing touch on damp hair to tighten your curls.

It also works well if you apply it to hair that has not been washed for a few days and on dry hair it gives a light hold.

FOR TIGHTER CURLS PATTERNS

If you have a tighter curl pattern, this salt spray may not provide enough hold to give you definition. Then it is advisable to add a few drops of your favorite styling lotion or a lighthold gel and shake the mixture. If you notice that the spray dries out your hair, mix in some coconut oil or a few drops of a nourishing leave-in spray. Otherwise, try using less salt next time.
